LGBT homework

LGBT activists are very important in the world because they will fight for equal rights for the members of the LGBT community.  There has been discrimination and hate towards these people, which I believe is unfair and wrong.  Everyone should be treated as equals and not hated on because of their sexual orientation or identity.  The LGBT activist in the past have gained some power in helping the LGBT"s, like Harvey Milk.  Harvey Milk was an openly gay politician in the 1970s that fought for rights.  Harvey Milk was responsible for passing stringent gay rights for his city and was the most famous gay politician in the US and was an icon in the city.  It’s very important for everyone to be equal, and there for it is important to see LGBT activists out there willing to take a stand.  The Laramie Project is about Mathew Shepard who was gay and beaten and left to die in the cold night by two local boys in 1998.  It was a hate crime that spread across the states and was turned into a law of harsher punishments in 2009.  There are many other LGBT activists such as David Corbett, a Canadian lawyer, Douglas Wilson a writer and even an Olympic gold medal swimmer Mark Tewsbury who fights for LGBT rights in sports. We have some activists and we will still need them until LGBT’s are just as equal as anyone else in the world.  Without these people who are standing up for their rights, the world may not be as it is today.  The LGBT community would be seen as a sin or unnatural, and they would have no rights, they would still be getting punished for being who they are.  Before there were activist to fight for the rights, the laws against LGBT’s were very strict and was socially unacceptable.  It would be hard to live in a world like that especially if you were a homosexual and was afraid to open up or if you did open up you would be punished.  LGBT activist have been so inspiring and are creating a change in the world for the better.  There are so many youth taking their own life because they are bullied and it’s not right, Rick Mercer is an openly gay television comedian and satirist he speaks about the wrongness of homophobia and bullying.  His rant on teen suicide was really inspiring because he shows that yes it’s nice to tell the youth that it gets better, but why not have it be better now.  Not wait until finishing school for things to brighten up, but to make things better in school so that the youth and really anyone getting bullied do not have to face the torment everyday and be told “it gets better”, that they are having a good high school experience.  LGBT activists are important and will always be important, they change the world to be a better place for everyone and that’s what we need in the world.
